The language that others use when talking about autism and autistic people, often matters a great deal to the autistic community. Using language and terms that are sensitive and respectful to the autistic community in general shows that you are consciously working towards being autism-affirming, either as an individual or as an organisation.

We always advise to ask an individual what their language and terminology is that they prefer that you use, as there will always be exceptions.

When talking about autism and autistic people generally, follow our guidelines below.


When referring to autistic people generally..

Say 'Autism' and Autistic' or 'autistic people'. Avoid 'people with autism' or 'people living with autism' or 'people suffering from autism' or 'people affected by autism'.
